England and Scotland may be part of the same country, but they feel like different worlds. Once you see the rugged Highland landscape, you start to understand why the Scots have been pushing for independence.

Edinburgh: One of the Most Beautiful Capitals in Europe

Old Town — Medieval Atmosphere

  • Royal Mile — The roughly one-mile stretch from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace. It's packed with tourists, but duck into the narrow alleyways (Closes) and you'll find the medieval atmosphere still very much alive
  • Edinburgh Castle — Admission £19.50 (approx. ₩39,064). The landmark visible from everywhere in the city. The One O'Clock Gun fires every day at 13:00 (except Sundays) and echoes across the city
  • St Giles' Cathedral — Right in the middle of the Royal Mile. Free entry. Stunning Gothic architecture
  • Real Mary King's Close — A guided tour through 17th-century streets preserved underground (£19.50 (approx. ₩39,064), book in advance)
  • Grassmarket — The square below Old Town. Packed with pubs and restaurants. The view looking up at Edinburgh Castle is seriously impressive

Free Viewpoints

  • Arthur's Seat — A 251m extinct volcano right in the heart of the city. About a 45-minute hike to the summit with 360-degree panoramic views of Edinburgh. It gets very windy, so bring a windproof jacket
  • Calton Hill — An easier climb than Arthur's Seat (10 minutes up). Home to the National Monument (the unfinished Parthenon) and a top sunset spot
  • Dean Village — A 15-minute walk from the city centre along the Water of Leith walkway. Feels like stepping into a storybook

Edinburgh Fringe Festival (August)

The world's largest performing arts festival. Held every August for about three weeks. The entire city becomes a stage.

  • Scale: 3,000+ shows, 300+ venues, millions of audience members
  • Genres: Theatre, comedy, musicals, circus, dance, music — everything
  • Free shows: Street performances on the Royal Mile, Free Fringe programme (donation-based)
  • Tickets: Mostly £5~30 (approx. ₩10,017~₩60,099), popular shows sell out fast

⚠️ Heads up for August in Edinburgh

  • Accommodation prices skyrocket to 3~5x normal rates. Book at least 2~3 months ahead
  • Even hostels can hit £50~80 (approx. ₩100,165~₩160,264) per night
  • Train tickets sell out fast too — grab Advance fares early
  • That said, it's absolutely worth going — a once-in-a-lifetime festival experience

Glasgow: The Underrated City

Often overshadowed by Edinburgh's tourist appeal, Glasgow is actually the more vibrant city when it comes to live music, contemporary art, and food.

  • Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum — Free. Houses works by Dalí and Renoir. The building itself is stunning red sandstone architecture
  • West End — Around the University of Glasgow. Cute pubs and restaurants on Ashton Lane, café culture along Byres Road
  • Glasgow Cathedral & Necropolis — A medieval cathedral plus a Victorian cemetery on the hill behind it. Great city views
  • Barras Market — Weekend flea market. Proper local vibes
  • Riverside Museum — Free. Transport and technology museum. Designed by Zaha Hadid
  • Music scene — King Tut's Wah Wah Hut (where Oasis were discovered), Barrowland Ballroom, and more. Live music every single night

💡 Edinburgh vs Glasgow

  • Edinburgh: Sightseeing, history, architecture, festivals → 2~3 days
  • Glasgow: Music, art, food, local culture → 1~2 days
  • Train between the two: 50 minutes, £8~15 (approx. ₩16,026~₩30,050) — easy day trip either way

The Highlands: The UK's Greatest Scenery

The Scottish Highlands are home to the most dramatic and wild landscapes in the UK. If you thought London showed you everything Britain has to offer, the Highlands will make you feel like you've arrived in a completely different country.

NC500 (North Coast 500)

A roughly 500-mile (800km) driving route around Scotland's northern coastline. Often called "Britain's Route 66."

  • Start/End point: Inverness
  • Recommended duration: At least 5 days (you can rush it in 3, but you'll regret it)
  • Highlights: Duncansby Stacks, Smoo Cave, Durness Beach, Applecross Pass (Bealach na Ba)
  • Fuel: Petrol stations get further apart the further north you go. Fill up whenever you're below half a tank

Getting Around the Highlands

  • Hire a car — it's really the only way — Public transport in the Highlands is extremely limited. Some routes only have 1~2 buses a day
  • Single-track roads — One-lane roads where you pull into passing places to let oncoming traffic through. Nerve-wracking at first, but you'll get used to it quickly
  • Public transport alternative: Small-group tour buses like Haggis Adventures and Rabbie's depart from Edinburgh/Glasgow (1~5 day tours, £40~200 (approx. ₩80,132~₩400,660))

ℹ️ Glasgow → Fort William train (West Highland Line)

Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. It crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct — yes, the Hogwarts Express bridge from Harry Potter. About 3 hours 45 minutes, £15~35 (approx. ₩30,050~₩70,116) (Advance). Grab a left-side window seat for the best loch and mountain views.

Isle of Skye

The crown jewel of the Highlands. A concentration of otherworldly scenery on one island.

Must-Do Spots

  • Old Man of Storr — Bizarre rock pinnacles. A 1.5~2 hour return hike from the car park. Get there early in the morning or you won't find parking
  • Fairy Pools — Crystal-clear turquoise natural pools. 1.5-hour return walk from the car park (free). Some people actually swim in them, but the water temperature is... brace yourself
  • Portree — The "capital" of Skye. A colourful harbour village. A good base for accommodation and restaurants
  • Neist Point Lighthouse — The western tip of the island. The clifftop walk to the lighthouse is breathtaking
  • Quiraing — A surreal green ridge hike. Moderate difficulty, 2~3 hour return

Practical Info

  • Transport: Connected to the mainland by the Skye Bridge. No toll. A hire car is essentially a must
  • Weather: Rain and mist are frequent. Treat a clear day as a bonus
  • Accommodation: Base yourself in Portree or Broadford. Book months in advance for summer
  • Food: Sea Breezes (seafood, Portree), Scorrybreac (fine dining, reservation essential)

Whisky Tours

Scotland is the birthplace of whisky. Even people who've never cared about it tend to get hooked after a single distillery tour.

  • Day trips from Edinburgh: Glenkinchie (30 min by car), Scotch Whisky Experience (Royal Mile — not a real distillery, but a good intro, £20 (approx. ₩40,066))
  • Speyside tour: Allow 2~3 days. Base yourself in Dufftown — 6+ distilleries within walking distance
  • Islay: 2-hour ferry ride (Kennacraig → Port Ellen). The island is small enough to hit all the major distilleries in 2~3 days

💡 Whisky tour tips

  • Most distilleries require advance booking (especially Macallan — sells out weeks ahead)
  • Designated drivers can usually get miniature bottles instead of tasting samples
  • Good for beginners: Glenfiddich (offers free tours), Oban (small and friendly)
  • Edinburgh Airport duty-free has surprisingly good whisky prices

Accommodation

B&B (Bed and Breakfast)

The classic Scotland accommodation. Small guesthouses converted from family homes, with breakfast included.

  • Price: £40~80 (approx. ₩80,132~₩160,264) per person per night
  • Scottish Breakfast: Eggs, bacon, sausage, haggis (!), black pudding, toast, grilled tomato, baked beans
  • The best part is chatting with your host — they're a goldmine of local tips

Hostels

  • SYHA (Scottish Youth Hostels) — They have locations even in remote Highland areas. £20~35 (approx. ₩40,066~₩70,116) per night
  • Independent hostels — Lots of charming ones on Skye, in Fort William, and elsewhere

Wild Camping

Wild camping is legal in Scotland (under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code).

  • Avoid farmland and areas near buildings
  • Follow "Leave No Trace" principles
  • Toilets: Dig a hole at least 30m from any water source
  • Midges are brutal from May to September — bring a midge head net and Smidge spray

🚨 Midge Warning

Highland midges are smaller than mosquitoes but attack in swarms. The worst times are June to August, evening hours, on calm days with no wind. Avon Skin So Soft or Smidge spray are the locals' secret weapons. If you don't take this seriously, camping will become actual torture.
