If you think London is all there is to England, head north. It's cheaper, friendlier, and steeped in the history of football and music.

Manchester: The City of Industry and Football

The largest urban area outside London. Noticeably cheaper than London, and many people say the locals are more open and approachable.

Football Pilgrimage

Manchester is home to two world-class football clubs.

Old Trafford — Manchester United

  • Stadium Tour: £30 (approx. ₩60,099) (adult), approx. 75 minutes. Access the player tunnel, dugout, and trophy room
  • Museum: Included in the tour. Club history, Munich air disaster memorial, the Ferguson era
  • Match Tickets: Premier League tickets £35–70 (approx. ₩70,116–₩140,231) (general sale). High-demand matches (Liverpool, City derbies) require membership. Cup competitions are easier to get into
  • Location: 20 minutes from the city centre by tram (Metrolink)

Etihad Stadium — Manchester City

  • Stadium Tour: £27 (approx. ₩54,089) (adult), approx. 60 minutes
  • Match Tickets: Slightly easier to get than United (£30–60 (approx. ₩60,099–₩120,198))
  • The National Football Museum used to be nearby but has moved to Cathedral Gardens in the city centre

💡 How to Get Football Tickets

  • Sign up for membership on each club's official website (£30–40 (approx. ₩60,099–₩80,132)/year) to access general sale
  • For high-demand matches, a Hospitality package (£100–300+ (approx. ₩200,330–₩600,990+)) is the surest bet
  • Official resale sites like StubHub are an option, but prices are inflated
  • Lower-profile matches (mid/lower-table opponents, early cup rounds) are sometimes available without membership

Manchester City Centre Highlights

  • Northern Quarter — Manchester's hipster district. Street art, indie cafes, record shops, vintage stores. Afflecks (a four-storey indie market) is the landmark
  • Manchester Museum — Part of the University of Manchester, free. Reopened after a major renovation in 2023. From dinosaurs to Egyptian mummies
  • John Rylands Library — Free. The Gothic interior looks like a Harry Potter film set. Home to a Gutenberg Bible
  • National Football Museum — Free entry (some interactive exhibits are paid). A must for any football fan
  • Manchester Art Gallery — Free. Known for its Pre-Raphaelite collection
  • Media City (Salford Quays) — A media hub housing BBC and ITV studios. Imperial War Museum North (free, designed by Daniel Libeskind)

Eating in Manchester

  • Curry Mile (Rusholme) — Over 50 Indian and Pakistani restaurants packed together. A curry runs about £8–15 (approx. ₩16,026–₩30,050)
  • Mackie Mayor — A renovated old market hall turned street food court. Pizza, tacos, seafood, etc. £8–12 (approx. ₩16,026–₩24,040)
  • Rudy's Pizza — Neapolitan-style pizza £7–11 (approx. ₩14,023–₩22,036). Expect a queue — it's that good
  • Chinese food: Chinatown here is the second largest after London's

Liverpool: The Beatles and Football on the Waterfront

45 minutes by train from Manchester. You can hit the main sights in a day, but an overnight stay makes it more relaxed.

Beatles Pilgrimage

  • The Beatles Story — Located at Albert Dock. Admission £19.95 (approx. ₩39,966). Covers the band from birth to breakup. Allow 2+ hours if you're a fan
  • Cavern Club — Mathew Street. The club where the Beatles played 292 times (the current building is a reconstruction). Free entry during the day; live music in the evening (£5–10 (approx. ₩10,017–₩20,033))
  • Penny Lane — Yes, that street from the song. Honestly, it's just a normal residential road, but it's a meaningful stop for fans
  • Strawberry Fields — Where John Lennon played as a child. Reopened as an exhibition space in 2019 (£15.95 (approx. ₩31,953))
  • Magical Mystery Tour — A 2-hour bus tour hitting all the Beatles-related spots (£21.95 (approx. ₩43,972), departs from Albert Dock)

More of Liverpool

  • Albert Dock — Regenerated waterfront area. Tate Liverpool (free), Merseyside Maritime Museum (free), plus restaurants and cafes
  • Liverpool Cathedral — The fifth largest cathedral in the world. Free entry. Tower tour £8.50 (approx. ₩17,028) for panoramic city views
  • Royal Albert Dock to the Three Graces — Liverpool's iconic waterfront. Was a UNESCO World Heritage Site (delisted in 2021, but still impressive)

Liverpool Football

Anfield — Liverpool FC

  • Stadium Tour: £25 (approx. ₩50,083) (adult). See the You'll Never Walk Alone gate and step into the Kop stand
  • Match Tickets: Liverpool tickets are extremely hard to get. Membership (£25 (approx. ₩50,083)/year) + Ticket Exchange is the most realistic route
  • Around Anfield: The atmosphere on matchday is electric. Hit the pubs — The Albert, The Sandon — from about 2 hours before kick-off to soak it in

York: A Medieval City with 2,000 Years of History

2 hours by train from London. A charming small city with layers of Roman, Viking, and medieval history.

Must-Visit Spots

York Minster

  • The largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. Admission £18 (approx. ₩36,059) (£16 (approx. ₩32,053) online)
  • Tower Climb: £8 (approx. ₩16,026) extra. 275 steps. 360-degree views over York

The Shambles

  • A narrow lane that still looks like it did in the 14th century. Said to have inspired Diagon Alley from Harry Potter

  • Great for photos, but it gets packed during the day — visit before 9am or in the evening

City Walls Walk

  • Walk along the medieval city walls that surround old York. Free
  • The full circuit is about 3.4km and takes 1.5–2 hours
  • There are access points along the way, so you can walk just a section

Betty's Tea Room

  • Established in 1919. York's iconic tea room
  • Afternoon Tea: £30–40 (approx. ₩60,099–₩80,132) per person. Scones, sandwiches, cakes + tea
  • Reality check: Queues of 30 minutes to an hour on weekends. Weekday afternoons are calmer
  • On a budget? A slice of cake + tea at the ground-floor cafe (£8–12 (approx. ₩16,026–₩24,040)) still gives you the experience

More of York

  • Jorvik Viking Centre — An immersive recreation of Viking-era York (£15.50 (approx. ₩31,051)). The ride even recreates the smells

⚠️ Lake District Hiking Safety

  • British mountains aren't high, but the weather changes fast. A clear morning can turn to fog and rain on the summit
  • Essentials: Waterproof jacket, proper hiking boots (not trainers), extra layers, a map app (OS Maps), water, snacks
  • Helvellyn's Striding Edge is not for anyone with a fear of heights. Accidents happen there every year
  • In winter (Dec–Feb), ice and snow cover the peaks — experienced hikers only

Enjoying the Lake District

  • Lake Cruises — Windermere Lake Cruises (£8–15 (approx. ₩16,026–₩30,050)). Take in the surrounding mountains from the water

  • Within the Lake District: Bus routes like the 555 (Lancaster–Keswick) and 599 (Windermere–Grasmere) cover the main areas, but services are infrequent
