Visa Expiry FAQ

🚨 Never overstay

Overstaying your visa is illegal and will count against you if you ever apply for another UK visa. Do not overstay — even by a single day.

Common Questions

"Can I stay in the UK right up until my visa expires?"

Your visa expiry date is the last day you can legally remain in the UK. You're allowed to stay until that day, but leaving it to the very last day is risky (flight delays, etc.), so give yourself a buffer.

"Can I travel to Europe and re-enter the UK before my visa expires?"

Yes, as long as you return before the expiry date. That said, re-entering very close to your expiry date may raise questions at the border, so be careful.

"Can I switch to tourist status after my visa expires?"

No. Your visa doesn't automatically convert to tourist leave. You must leave the country first and then re-enter — and check the latest ETA requirements before you do.

Visa Extension

  • The YMS visa cannot be extended (2-year maximum)
  • To stay longer, you'd need to switch to a different visa (e.g. Skilled Worker)
  • If you've applied to switch and are waiting for a decision, you can stay legally in the meantime (Section 3C leave)

Things to Sort Before You Leave

Tax Refund (P85)

  • Submit a P85 form to HMRC
  • If you've overpaid tax, you can claim a refund
  • You can apply online after you've left, but it's easier to do it while you're still in the UK
  • Refunds typically take 6~12 weeks

Bank Account

  • Transfer your remaining balance home (WISE is the easiest option)
  • Monzo works overseas, so you don't need to close it straight away
  • You can update your address to an overseas one and keep the account open

Change of Address & Post

  • Important post (tax documents, etc.) may arrive after you leave
  • Consider setting up Royal Mail Redirection to forward your post
  • Alternatively, update your address to a trusted friend's in the UK

NI Number

  • Your NI number is valid for life — no need to cancel it
  • You can use the same number if you return to the UK in the future
  • Make sure you have it written down somewhere safe

Council Tax

  • Your bill is calculated up to the day you move out
  • If you've overpaid, apply for a refund
  • Notify your local council of your move-out date

Mobile Phone

  • On Pay As You Go? Just leave it — no action needed
  • On a monthly contract? Cancel it or check whether it works abroad
  • If you want to keep a UK number, switch to a PAYG SIM like giffgaff

GP Registration

  • Not mandatory, but it's good practice to let your GP know you're leaving

Packing Up & Shipping Your Stuff

  • If you have a lot of belongings, use an international shipping service (ParcelForce, etc.)
  • Sell what you don't need on Facebook Marketplace or community group chats
  • Shipping often costs more than the item is worth — be ruthless about what you keep

💡 Tip

Start clearing out things you don't use 2~3 months before you leave. That way you won't be scrambling at the end. Vinted, Facebook Marketplace, and community group chats are your friends.
